As of May 2021, Amazon Web Services (AWS) commanded 32% of the public cloud market worldwide, making it the leading player compared to Azure (19%) and Google Cloud (7%).
Launched in 2006, AWS practically launched the concept of cloud service providers offering Infrastructure-as-a-Service (SaaS) back when cloud computing was still not established as a mainstream alternative to on-premises infrastructure or data centres.
The platform is known for its aggressive expansion and regular price drops. This built up a large user base that in turn funded ever-increasing upgrades and improvements that keep the platform relevant despite stiff competition starting in 2010.

What is AWS Direct Connect?
AWS Direct Connect is a private, high-performing connection that connects on-premises data centres and enterprise network to AWS cloud resources. This dedicated connection reduces network egress costs while providing businesses with a more consistent, reliable connection than Internet-based options.
Direct Connect is compatible with all AWS cloud services that are accessible over the Internet, and is available in speeds starting at 50Mbps and scaling up to 100Gbps.
With Direct Connect, you can create virtual interfaces directly to public services such as Amazon S3 or to Amazon VPC (Virtual Private Cloud), where you can launch AWS resources in a logically isolated virtual network.
Direct Connect bypasses the public internet, but it does so only if the customer is colocated with an existing Direct Connect location or has access to an Direct Connect partner such as Epsilon. Through its interconnection fabric, the latter can provide access to AWS infrastructure over a dedicated link.
How Direct Connect works
Using a standard Ethernet fiber optic cable from a router, users link their network to a Direct Connect location called a Region (see next section below). A single connection in a public Region can be used to access public AWS services in all other public Regions.
With this single connection, users can create virtual interfaces directly to public AWS services (for example, to Amazon S3) or to Amazon VPC, bypassing internet service providers in the network path.
Regions and zones
AWS clusters its data centres in what it calls physical Regions where data centres are clustered. Each AWS Region consists of multiple, isolated, and physically separate AZ (Availability Zones or groups of logical data centres).
AZs are distinct locations within a Region that are engineered to be isolated from failures in other Availability Zones. They provide inexpensive, low-latency network connectivity to other Availability Zones in the same Region. Importantly, each region is completely independent.
Also, customers focused on high availability can design their applications to run in multiple AZs to achieve even greater fault-tolerance. AWS infrastructure Regions meet the highest levels of security, compliance, and data protection.
In larger regions, AWS places its compute, storage, database, and other select AWS services in Local Zones to establish closer connections to AWS infrastructure for single-digit millisecond latencies. Each Local Zone location is an extension of an AWS Region where users can run latency sensitive applications using AWS services.
Furthermore, unlike other cloud providers, which often define a region as a single data centre, the multiple AZ design of every AWS Region offers advantages for customers. Each AZ has independent power, cooling, and physical security and is connected via redundant, ultra-low-latency networks.
Customers focused on high availability can design their applications to run in multiple AZs to achieve even greater fault-tolerance. AWS infrastructure Regions meet the highest levels of security, compliance, and data protection.
Finally, the cloud platform provides a more extensive global footprint than any other cloud provider. To support its global footprint and ensure customers are served across the world, AWS is always opening more new Regions, thereby expanding its extensive global footprint competitively.

The dedicated connection established with your corporate network resources bypasses standard internet connections and all associated risks. The direct routing of data also ensures consistent network performance at speeds up to 100Gbps. Due to reduced bandwidth commitments to conventional internet service providers, Direct Connect can reduce network bandwidth costs. - Direct Connect allows you to establish a private connection between AWS and your data centre, office, or colocation environment. This can increase bandwidth throughput and provide a more stable network experience than public Internet-based connections.
- Transferring data out of AWS with Direct Connect is also charged at reduced data transfer rate. This is an ideal choice for organisations frequently moving workloads in and out of the cloud. Additionally, Direct Connect is compatible with all AWS services accessible over the public internet.
